Instrument Selection and Software Configuration

eXact Auto Scan and Intellitrax2

In the fast-paced printing and packaging market, X-Rite's data-driven, standardized, and intelligent scanning and measuring instruments, such as eXact Auto Scan and Intellitrax2, are key to maintaining a competitive edge. They help numerous printing plants streamline and shorten printing times, facilitating efficient, accurate, and professional color communication between machines, clients, and quality control.

Selecting the right instrument to maximize its cost-effectiveness is a worthwhile consideration for printing plants.

Scanning Analysis and Application

eXact Auto Scan Features

Economical, flexible, and versatile. It can be detached for manual single-point measurement, manual short strip scanning, or mounted on a track for automatic scanning. Suitable for companies that need scanning functionality while managing costs.

Intellitrax2 Features

Fast, accurate, non-contact sample measurement, automatic alignment and color strip capture, and easy operation, making it particularly advantageous for large-scale machine production.

Standard and Strip Creation

Establishing standards and strips is crucial in practical applications. Many printing companies, after purchasing advanced equipment, may operate it simply, but the equipment and software may suffer if personnel change or there are slight variations.

International Standard Selection

Common software such as pressSingn, InkKeyControl, and IntelliTrax Launcher integrate international standards and Pantone, G7, PSO, FOGRA, ISO, and Japan Color. Target values can be automatically loaded, reducing job setup time.

Custom Standards

Custom four-color and spot colors can be measured directly using eXact, inputted manually, or imported from customer-provided data.

Strip Creation

Edit strips to the corresponding length of your machine's width. This is key to ensuring that measurements accurately reflect the data and the depth of each ink key! To begin creating a strip, select the tile type from the list, then select the ink; the tile will appear on the strip. Continue until your strip is complete.

Scanning Analysis and Application

After scanning, the software provides clear data results, analysis indicators, and generates reports to help press operators and quality control personnel make quick judgments.

Scan Results

1. Click “Job Information” to create new jobs and open existing ones.

2. Click “Press and Ink” to view and change ink standards and swap color stations.

3. Click “Strip” to view and change the used strip.

4. Click “Target” to view and modify the tolerance for each color.

5. These are the density settings for each color ink. Click the value to modify it.

6. This shows the density values for each ink key of the current color. Green indicates within tolerance, red indicates outside the tolerance range.

7. Click “OK” saves the current sheet's density scan data as an “OK” sample; subsequent sheets will reference this “OK” sample density for printing.

8. View Scan Information

9. Click the left and right page turn buttons to view each scan data. Scan Data

10. Scan Button

Custom Scan Results as Initial Inspection Standard

During the actual scanning process, if a part of the same sheet needs to be darker or lighter, the scan data can be set as the “OK sample” for the first piece, and subsequent production can be monitored according to this sample.

1. After scanning, if the color and other aspects meet the requirements, click “OK” in the lower left corner to set the sheet's scan data as the “OK sample”. After confirmation, the interface will change as shown below.

2. Click “Scan Information” and change the sheet status to “Preparation Stage” to cancel the “OK sample” setting.

Paper Whiteness, Hue, Trapping, Dot Gain, Gray Balance

The scan results not only provide a visual indication of the density and hue of each ink key, but also clearly feedback on paper whiteness, trapping, dot gain, and gray balance. The press operator can easily see how to make adjustments by clicking on the interface.

Generate Scan Report

Scan results can be generated into PDF reports for recording and saving to ensure that the quality meets customer or industry standards.

Release light from the expanded color gamut ink

Compared to traditional four-color printing, Extended Gamut Color (ECG) inks offer significant advantages. ECG inks are revolutionizing the way colors are reproduced on a wide range of substrates, enhancing both the visual appeal and accuracy of printed materials.

How to avoid common issues in the printing workshop

In print production, color consistency is a key metric for customer acceptance—but even minor deviations in the workshop stage can often result in finished products that don’t meet color standards, leading to returns or rework. From errors in ink mixing ratios and differences in substrate ink absorption to fluctuations in ambient temperature and humidity, as well as inaccuracies in equipment calibration, these seemingly small variables can accumulate to cause noticeable color discrepancies.
