How do you interpret spectral curves? Three tips to decode the “data code” behind color.

The most common phrase you’ll hear in a print shop is: “This color doesn’t quite feel right.”

The word “feeling” is precisely what color management seeks to eliminate. Whether a color is correct should not be judged by feel, but by data. And at the very foundation of all color data lies… Spectral curve

Today, we won’t delve into complicated formulas—just three easy-to-remember rules. That way, the next time you see a spectral curve, you’ll be able to decipher its color information.


 

What does a spectral curve look like?

The x-axis is Light wavelength From 400 nm to 700 nm, the spectrum corresponds to violet, blue, green, yellow–orange, and red. The vertical axis represents reflectance: higher values indicate more light is reflected, resulting in a brighter color, while lower values mean more light is absorbed by the pigment, yielding a darker shade.

A curve is the way a pigment responds to “all visible light.”


 

Rule 1: Set the color hue, then examine the curve’s contour.

As long as the overall shape of the curve remains identical—whether it’s shifted upward or downward—the hue stays completely unchanged.

What does that mean? Blue stays blue, and green stays green—there’s no color shift. Whether you add more or less ink, print thicker or thinner, as long as the waveform profile remains unchanged, the color stays the same.

Only when the outline changes has the pigment type been switched, and the hue has gone awry.


 

Rule Two: Determine the depth and examine the height of the vertical axis.

When the curve shifts upward, highlights become stronger and colors lighten. When the curve shifts downward, highlights weaken and colors grow deeper and darker.

For the same phthalocyanine blue, when printed thickly with a high pigment concentration, the entire color curve shifts downward, resulting in a deeper blue. When diluted, the curve rises, yielding a lighter shade of blue. Throughout the entire range, the underlying blue hue remains unchanged.

Depth and shallowness represent a quantitative change, not a qualitative one.


 

Rule 3: Determine the color intensity by examining the peak-to-valley difference.

Wave crest and trough The greater the contrast, the cleaner and more vibrant the color. When the highs and lows are close together, the differences in light reflection are small, resulting in a grayish, muted hue.

When choosing high-saturation inks for printing, don’t rely on guesswork—simply consult the spectral curve and select the one with a large peak‑to‑valley difference. The visual performance will be top‑notch.


 

Practical Case: Phthalocyanine Blue

The main absorption peak of phthalocyanine blue is centered at 465 nm, right within the standard blue‑light range—this is precisely why it appears blue. However, note that a minor shoulder emerges at 660 nm, which falls in the red‑light region; consequently, conventional phthalocyanine blue typically exhibits a slight reddish tint and is not an absolutely pure blue.

For the same phthalocyanine pigment, varying concentrations do not alter the spectral waveform; instead, the curve shifts vertically as a whole. As concentration increases, the overall reflectance decreases, and the color becomes darker.


 

How do you read a yellow spectral curve?

Yellow does not exhibit the characteristic double peak of phthalocyanine; note the two inflection points at 410 nm and 460 nm. The overall slope of the curve changes markedly at these two wavelengths.

Whether yellow looks good and bright enough doesn’t depend on guesswork— the greater the contrast between the highlights and the shadowed lows, the higher the saturation, and the brighter the yellow. With little contrast, yellow turns gray, and the printed image lacks vibrancy.

When selecting yellow ink, compare the two spectra: the ink with a larger peak-to-valley difference exhibits superior visual performance.


 

Summary

The ultimate goal of color communication is data, and the starting point of data is the spectral curve.

You don’t need to memorize all three rules—just remember one sentence: The curve’s shape defines the hue, the vertical axis indicates lightness, and the peak-to-valley difference determines saturation.
